Grok Image: Getting in Touch With Your Roots

How well do you know your root vegetables?

Like many other Americans I was sitting at a table last week eating horseradish to remind me of the bitterness of slavery. My horseradish came out of a jar. But I began to wonder, what does the stuff actually look like?

Here’s the thing. Horseradish, of course, is a root vegetable, and sometimes we get so accustomed to our jars of condiments in the fridge we forget what the actual vegetables look like. So, being an academic, I’ve come up with a quick and easy quiz, possibly the easiest of your adult life.

Pop Quiz: Identify the Horseradish (Sans Jar)

There are three images below. All root vegetables. Which is the horseradish?

If you know, be the first to comment (correctly) or tell us your favorite story about the bitter herb. If you don’t know and you like a good dollop of horseradish in a bloody Mary every now and then, then find out. There’s nothing like the kick of homemade horseradish — it’s nutritious (no fat), delicious, easy to make, and with every homemade batch you make, you cut back on the production of one of those new little jars.

So, is it Image 1, Image 2, or Image 3? Oh, and for bonus points, who can identify the other two veggies?

Steve identified all three roots correctly; Tracey came in a close second (the last image is of rutabagas, which are technically part-turnip).
